In contrast to a cartesian perspective and a mechanistic view that analyses, separates and breaks reality into isolated parts, systemic thinking connects, integrates and considers the elements of a system, in relation to one another and in their interactions with the system and its broader environment.

Unlike analytical approaches that focus on individuals or isolated components and attempt to understand the whole through its separate parts, the systemic approach seeks to decode patterns of interaction and the ongoing adaptations between the different elements of a system. Its purpose is to develop a deeper understanding of the system in its overall coherence and complexity.

Systemic thinking is based on principles that apply to all systems, regardless of the nature of their components or the relationships between them. These principles highlight several key properties, such as feedback, interdependence, purpose and homeostasis, which form the foundations of systemic transformation in human systems: families, organizations, teams, associations and groups.
